We had our unofficially official seats in media class - because who needs a seating chart when instinct has you claiming spots since day one? then one day, Sir Zia dropped the bomb: “You have a preliminary task!” Naturally, panic turned into purpose, and just like that, the four of us looked at each other and we became a team. Step one? Make a group chat because no team is official without one.
Step two? Pick a genre. Filza and Fatima jinxed over “coming of age” like they had rehearsed it, hit us with the classic “great minds think alike,” and with no objections, no regrets. We had our genre.
The coming-of-age genre portrays a character’s journey of growth and transformation, often marking the transition from youth to adulthood or from innocence to experience. These narratives highlight emotional, psychological, and moral evolution as protagonists face challenges, uncover their true selves, and explore universal themes like identity, love, loss, and belonging. This genre has become one of the most timeless and influential in literature, film, and media.
Since everyone undergoes moments of growth, these stories hold a universal appeal, resonating with audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Themes such as self-discovery, identity, and relationships remain relevant, creating an enduring connection. Audiences form meaningful bonds with the protagonists, fostering empathy and a sense of shared humanity.
By addressing questions like “Who am I?” and “What do I aspire to become?” these stories reflect societal expectations, generational tensions, and cultural norms, providing valuable insights into personal and collective experiences. They blend seamlessly with other genres—fantasy, romance, and thrillers—and adapt to any cultural or historical context, enhancing their global relevance.
These tales remind us of the natural process of growth and change, instilling values like empathy, and self-awareness. Through these narratives, individuals are encouraged to embrace their journeys of transformation.
